Massage of Internet

a performative installation shown 2017 in Potsdam and 2018 in Basel

The Installation MASSAGE OF INTERNET developed in 2017 from a discussion on the book ▷The Medium is the Massage◁ by Marshall McLuhan. The interactive massage table is built to make the interconnection of the individual experience physically tangible. The individual is facing downwards lying on a massage table. They look through a hole facing a screen and have overear headphones on. The film on the screen plays internet phenomenas and widely known extracts of movies, websites etc. These are shown briefly in a short glimpse of a scene that triggers the memory of said participant in which they associate thoughts in an accelerated rapidity. In the first attempt, and in addition to the visual stimulation, the person lying on this table is triggered by vibration motors built into the surface of the table which is controlledby another location by a irregular impulse given by a person pressing buttons. In the second attempt the physical experience is sharpened even further. A classic looking wooden marble game invites others to play – in a location seperate from the table. Moving these buttonshydraulic pumps are activated that can rise and lower the massage table from each corner. Depending on which setting is chosen, the person experiencing theses movements on the table can additionally be massaged manually by various tools for an enhancement to the physical experience.
